Elon Musk's Daily Routine - What, Why and How

Elon Musk seems to be in every newspaper every week at the moment. In the leadup to the US presidential election and ever since Trump’s inauguration, there are headlines after headlines about him and what he’s up to. From his posts on X, through to his plans for the DOGE (Trump’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency), he’s making waves. He is, undoubtedly, one of the most influential entrepreneurs of the modern era. He is leading groundbreaking companies like Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, and in 2022, he expanded his reach even further with the highly publicised takeover of Twitter, which he later rebranded as X. In 2024 he turned his focus to politics, supporting Trump more publicly in the months leading up to the US presidential election. His new role in politics is in a position designed to streamline government operations, much like we saw him doing with all the cuts when he acquired Twitter/X. Coupled with his long-standing ambitions for space exploration and AI development, everything here requires an almost superhuman level of efficiency and discipline.
Understanding how Musk structures his day will, we hope, provide invaluable insight into the methods (and perhaps sometimes madnesses) behind his immense productivity and success. Despite his seemingly chaotic schedule, there is a structure and logic to how he manages multiple billion-dollar ventures while also making time for personal priorities. His routine is designed not just for efficiency, but also to ensure that his hands-on approach to leadership remains a key component of his success. We’ve collated these insights from a variety of online sources, including interviews, news reports and articles. It is clearly important to note that whilst this article is based on research and public accounts of Elon’s routine, his habits may vary, and not all details are confirmed. If you know Elon personally though, then please do ask him to check and report back to us!
What Musk’s Daily Routine Looks Like
Musk reportedly typically wakes up around 9:00 AM, having refined his sleeping habits to ensure he gets approximately six hours of rest each night, working late into the night until about 3am. He has repeatedly stated that sleeping longer than this makes him feel sluggish and unproductive. Unlike many high-powered executives, he does not start his day with meditation or an extensive morning ritual. Instead, he jumps straight into work, often beginning with responding to critical emails and addressing urgent matters. His inbox is, we can only imagine, filled with high-priority correspondence across multiple companies, so he prioritises those that require immediate action.
One notable aspect of Musk’s morning is that he often skips breakfast, though he occasionally opts for an omelette if he does eat. You may have seen reports of his weight-loss and his recently come out in support of Mounjaro – the Ozempic-like injected weight-loss drug. He posted on X, an “Ozempic Santa” Christmas themed photograph of a slimmed-down Elon Musk.
Musk believes in eliminating unnecessary tasks that do not contribute to his overall efficiency. After handling emails, he moves on to engineering and design meetings, which he considers the most important aspect of his work. Unlike traditional CEOs who spend most of their time in financial or managerial meetings, Musk prefers to be deeply involved in the technical aspects of his companies. He has stated that he dedicates around 80% of his workday to engineering and design, ensuring that he remains at the forefront of innovation. It’s worth highlighting too that whilst Musk owns X and Neuralink, he is not the CEO.
The afternoon consists of back-to-back meetings, usually focused on operational and strategic decision-making. Musk uses a time-blocking method to structure his day, breaking it down into five-minute segments to maximise productivity. This approach ensures that he can address multiple issues without wasting time on unnecessary discussions. As seen during his Twitter takeover, he often eliminates roles and restructures teams to improve efficiency, applying the same ruthless focus to time management in his own life.
In the evenings, Musk attempts to spend some time with his children, incorporating dinner into his schedule whenever possible. However, work often extends late into the night, particularly when critical projects are underway. He has been known to sleep at Tesla or SpaceX facilities during particularly intense periods, and more recently, he reportedly spends nights at the DOGE office in Washington, D.C.. His relentless work ethic is a key factor in his ability to drive innovation across multiple industries simultaneously.
Why Musk Does What He Does
Musk's daily routine reflects his overarching philosophy on productivity, hard work and innovation. His intense focus on work undoubtedly stems from his belief that in order to drive meaningful change, he must be directly involved in the problem-solving process. He has often stated that he does not consider himself a traditional CEO but rather an engineer and inventor first. His title at SpaceX even includes CTO. In fact, at SpaceX, Elon Musk is technically the CEO, CTO and Chair! This mindset influences how he structures his day, prioritising hands-on involvement in design and technical problem-solving over administrative duties.
Another key reason behind Musk’s routine is his desire to push the boundaries of human capability. He has a deep conviction that rapid innovation is necessary to ensure humanity’s survival and long-term prosperity. Whether it’s making life multi-planetary through SpaceX or accelerating the transition to sustainable energy via Tesla, he structures his schedule around activities that contribute to these goals. His relentless work ethic ensures that his companies remain at the cutting edge of technology.
Musk’s emphasis on efficiency also extends to his leadership style. When he took over Twitter, he famously eliminated thousands of jobs in an effort to streamline the company’s operations. His belief in a lean, high-performance work environment translates into his personal habits as well. He avoids unnecessary meetings, keeps communication direct and concise, and ruthlessly eliminates inefficiencies from his schedule. His appointment to DOGE under Trump aligns with this philosophy, as the department is focused on cutting waste and improving governmental processes. Russell Vought has been a key partner in this endeavour, sharing Musk’s vision for efficiency and reform.
How it Works in Reality
Musk’s approach to time management is built on several core principles. One of the most effective techniques he employs is time blocking, a method that allows him to focus on high-priority tasks without distraction. By scheduling his day in precise increments, he ensures that every minute is accounted for and used productively. This method also prevents him from becoming overwhelmed by the sheer volume of responsibilities he manages on a daily basis.
In addition to time blocking, Musk prioritises deep work—long, uninterrupted periods of intense focus on complex problems. This is particularly evident in his engineering and design sessions, where he immerses himself in technical discussions without distractions. He also minimises decision fatigue by simplifying routine aspects of his life. For example, he often wears similar clothing styles daily and avoids spending time on trivial decisions, allowing him to reserve cognitive energy for more critical tasks.
Delegation is another crucial factor in Musk’s efficiency. While he remains deeply involved in technical aspects, he entrusts competent executives to handle operational matters. This balance allows him to focus on innovation while ensuring that his companies continue to function smoothly. However, his leadership approach can sometimes be demanding, as seen during his early days at X, where he imposed intense workloads and high expectations on employees.
It's pretty impressive, right?
Elon Musk’s daily routine is a testament to his unwavering commitment to productivity, innovation, and efficiency. His structured yet adaptable approach enables him to manage multiple companies while continuing to push the boundaries of technology. By focusing on engineering, prioritising deep work, and eliminating inefficiencies, Musk has cultivated a lifestyle that maximises his impact.
His recent foray into government efficiency through DOGE demonstrates that his methods are not confined to the private sector. Whether streamlining Twitter’s operations before rebranding it to X, revolutionising transportation, or attempting to optimise federal spending, Musk’s disciplined approach to time management remains a crucial factor in his success. His ability to balance multiple high-profile ventures while maintaining a rigorous schedule serves as a masterclass in effective time management and productivity. What we are extremely interested in seeing is what happens next. DOGE is, undoubtedly, going to be an enormous challenge, with not only one company but dozens of departments across the US with hundreds of thousands of different roles, responsibilities and tactical strategies to consider. We don’t think it’s an unrealistic comment to say that the world is watching and if he can pull it off then we are certain it will make way for streamlined government process, departments and management. Watch this space.
